A short brief for AI agents
llms.txt is a plain markdown file at the root of your site (yoursite.com/llms.txt). It says in a few lines who you are, what you do, and which pages hold the important detail, so an assistant or agent reading your site does not have to dig through menus, scripts and pop-ups to find it.
A proposal that has spread
It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org and revised in 2026. It is not an official web standard, but documentation platforms now generate one automatically, Chrome's Lighthouse checks for one in its agentic browsing audits, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Google publish llms.txt files for their own developer documentation.
Built from your own words
The generator writes the file from what you enter: your name, what you sell, where, and the pages that matter. Nothing is added that you did not say, so what an assistant reads there is what you would tell a customer.
It is not a ranking factor
Nobody has confirmed that llms.txt moves a site up in Google or in an AI answer. Treat it as one tidy, cheap step that makes your facts easy to read, alongside the work that does move answers: clear pages, consistent listings and reviews.
Link the pages you want quoted
An llms.txt that lists your service pages, prices or process and your contact page points an agent at the answers. A file that only repeats your tagline gives it nothing new.
Keep it in step with the site
If your services, areas or phone number change, change the file too. An out-of-date brief is worse than none, because it is the one place you told machines the facts directly.

Where do I put the file?
At the root of your domain, so it opens at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, a file manager or SFTP upload to the site root works; on most hosting it is the same folder as robots.txt.
Will llms.txt get me into ChatGPT answers?
Not on its own. Assistants name the businesses they find described clearly and consistently across the web. The file makes your own description easy to read; your pages, directory listings and reviews decide whether you are named.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt does not allow or block anything; it is a summary for whoever reads it. If robots.txt blocks the AI crawlers, they will not read llms.txt either.
