AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of making your page the one a search engine or assistant takes its answer from: the featured snippet, the People Also Ask box, the AI Overview or the sentence a voice assistant reads out. SEO earns a place in the list of results; AEO earns the answer above the list. The two share most of their groundwork, but AEO is judged on one thing: whether a page answers a specific question clearly enough to be quoted.

This guide explains where answers appear, how AEO differs from SEO and GEO, what the work involves, and how to measure it.

Where answers appear

  • Featured snippets: the boxed answer at the top of Google's results, quoted from one page with a link to it.
  • People Also Ask: the expanding list of related questions, each answered from a page.
  • AI Overviews: Google's generated summary at the top of some results, with links to the pages it draws on.
  • Voice assistants: a single answer read aloud, usually taken from the same kind of source.

In each case, one page is chosen as the source. AEO is about being that page for the questions your buyers ask.

They overlap more than they differ. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, with no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews. AEO is SEO done with one question in mind at a time. For the assistant side, see what GEO is and whether you need it.

What AEO work involves

1. Finding the questions that matter

Not every question is worth answering. The useful ones come from three places: the queries already bringing impressions in Search Console, the People Also Ask boxes on your main searches, and the questions your sales team hears on calls. Questions that bring readers but never customers are left out, however much traffic they promise.

2. Answering in the first two sentences

Search engines lift answers that stand on their own. Put the direct answer at the top, in plain words, then explain. A page that makes the reader scroll through an introduction before it answers is rarely the one quoted.

3. Headings that match how people ask

Turn vague headings such as "Our process" into the question people actually type, such as "How long does a website redesign take?" Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons, because those are the formats answer boxes reuse.

4. One page per question that matters

If two of your pages answer the same question, neither may be chosen. Give each important question one clear home, and link to it from related pages.

5. Structured data that matches the page

Article and FAQPage markup tell machines what a page contains, as long as they describe text that is actually visible on the page. Be realistic about what it does: Google now shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health sites, and it no longer shows HowTo rich results at all. Markup helps a page be understood; it does not buy a special display.

6. Trust signals

Answer engines prefer sources that look reliable: a named author with relevant experience, a clear date, accurate facts, and a business that is described the same way across the web. Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content describes what it looks for.

How to measure AEO

  • Search Console: watch impressions and positions for question queries. A page that gains impressions at position one or two is often appearing in an answer feature.
  • Answer tracking: check, on a schedule, whether your page is the featured snippet or appears in People Also Ask for your target questions.
  • AI Overview checks: search your main questions and note which sources the overview cites.
  • Enquiries: the point is customers, so track which answer pages lead to contact.

Nobody can guarantee a featured snippet. Google chooses it and changes its choice often. What you can track is the list of questions you now own, month by month.

Where to start this week

  1. List ten questions customers ask before they buy from you.
  2. Search each one and note who is quoted today.
  3. For each, find the page on your site that should answer it, or note that none does.
  4. Rewrite the opening of those pages so the answer comes first, in two sentences.
  5. Check the result in Search Console after Google has recrawled the pages.

Questions people ask about AEO

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: optimising pages so search engines and assistants use them as the source of a direct answer, such as a featured snippet, a People Also Ask result or an AI Overview.

Is AEO different from SEO?

It is a focused part of SEO. SEO aims to rank a page in the results; AEO aims to have one specific question answered from your page in the answer features above the results. The technical and content foundations are shared.

Does FAQ schema still help with AEO?

It helps search engines understand a page when it matches the visible questions and answers. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, so most sites should not expect a visible FAQ display from it.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Changes to existing pages can show up once Google recrawls them, often within weeks, but there is no fixed timeline and no guarantee. New pages take longer, because they first have to be indexed and trusted.
