This page previously held a contact form and little else. It is now what it should have been: a plain account of what SEO involves for a business competing in New York, and how to judge whoever you hire to do it.
Why New York is harder than most markets
Three things make it unusual. Competition is national, because a New York business often competes with firms selling into the city from anywhere. Paid costs are among the highest anywhere, which pushes more businesses towards organic search and raises the competition there too. And the market is really many local markets: a search in Brooklyn and the same search in Midtown return different results.
The practical effect is that broad terms are expensive to chase and specific ones are undervalued.
What the work actually consists of
Technical health. Crawlable pages, sensible structure, fast loading, no duplicate or orphaned content. Unglamorous and non-negotiable.
Pages that deserve to rank. One page per genuine question or service, written to answer it rather than to repeat a phrase.
Local signals. A verified Google Business Profile, consistent listings, and steady reviews. For anything with a physical location this outweighs most on-page work.
Authority. Links and mentions from places that have their own standing. Slow, and the part most often faked.
How to judge an agency
- Ask what they will do in the first thirty days. A real answer describes an audit, findings and a prioritised list. Vague answers mean nobody looked.
- Ask who does the work. Much of the industry subcontracts. Know before signing, not after.
- Check account ownership. Analytics, Search Console and Ads should be registered to you, with the agency added as a user.
- Read reviews by date. A cluster in one week was bought.
Claims to walk away from
Guaranteed first position, results in thirty days, a special relationship with Google, or backlinks by the thousand. The first is impossible, the second confuses paid with organic, the third does not exist as a ranking factor, and the fourth is a penalty being arranged on your behalf.
Realistic timelines
Technical fixes can show within weeks. Google Maps positions typically move in six to ten weeks. Competitive organic rankings generally take three to six months and then compound. Anyone promising faster is either guessing or planning to rank you for something nobody searches.
We work from India with clients across more than 25 countries, and we are upfront about that rather than pretending to a New York address. If you want a view of where your site stands, the free scan takes a few minutes and a full audit about forty-eight hours.
What makes SEO in New York different?
Competition is national rather than local, paid costs are among the highest anywhere which pushes more businesses into organic search, and the city behaves as many local markets with different results by neighbourhood.
How long does SEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show within weeks, Google Maps positions typically in six to ten weeks, and competitive organic rankings in three to six months, after which they compound.
Can an SEO company guarantee first position on Google?
No. Nobody controls Google's results. A guarantee of position one is either dishonest or attached to a phrase with no meaningful search demand.
Who should own my Analytics and Search Console accounts?
You should, registered under your own email with the agency added as a user, so your history stays with you if you change providers.
Do I need a local agency to rank in New York?
No. Proximity helps communication rather than ranking. What matters is whether the team understands your market and can show what they would do first.
